As natural language chatbots such as ChatGPT become increasingly popular, it was inevitable that competition would intensify. Google has introduced its own chatbot, Bard AI, to compete in the market. Bard has been developed to enhance the company’s search engine and is built upon Google’s LaMDA language model, which is akin to ChatGPT’s GPT-3.5. As a result, Bard can engage in conversations on various subjects and produce unique text that has not been seen before.

What is Google’s Bard AI?

Google’s Bard is a generative and conversational AI chatbot, similar to ChatGPT and Bing Chat.

According to the company, Bard has the ability to assist with creative endeavors, simplify complex subjects, and extract information from diverse online sources. In addition, it can tackle intricate requests such as locating recipes customized to the ingredients accessible in your refrigerator, a feat not presently feasible using only Google Search.

As stated in their announcement blog post, Google indicated that Bard could be utilized to “discover information on the top-performing football strikers and obtain exercises to improve your abilities” or “clarify new insights from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a child aged 9.”

In addition to straightforward inquiries, Bard can also offer opinions in response to complex questions such as “Which instrument is simpler to learn, piano or guitar, and how much practice is required for each?” Such broad queries may be challenging for even a human to answer, necessitating several minutes of research.

According to Google, Bard is capable of summarizing information from multiple web pages into a few paragraphs, which can potentially appear as the top results on search pages. Presently, users must access Bard through a dedicated website, similar to ChatGPT, as indicated by the displayed images and demonstrations.

How does Google Bard work?

As mentioned earlier, Google’s Bard chatbot shares some similarities with ChatGPT. Both use a large language model at their core and have been optimized for open-ended conversations. However, they do not use the same model — ChatGPT uses GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, while Bard uses Google’s own LaMDA model.

The effectiveness of Bard might be influenced by the fact that it employs a distinct language model from ChatGPT.

Large language models such as ChatGPT and LaMDA have a flaw: their text generation quality can vary significantly. This is due to the chatbot’s reliance on training data for its text generation ability. For instance, ChatGPT’s training data is only up until 2021, meaning that it may produce fabricated information if asked about current events. Additionally, any biases present in the training data can result in responses that are skewed.
The delay in Google’s release of Bard can be attributed to the potential risks posed by its two aforementioned limitations. Unlike well-established competitors such as OpenAI’s GPT models, Bard may produce answers that appear credible but are inaccurate, thus facilitating the spread of misinformation. An example of this occurred when Google’s official demo video showed Bard making a factual error, resulting in a decline in the company’s stock. Consequently, Google included a substantial amount of disclaimers when making Bard accessible to users.

What is LaMDA?

LaMDA, short for Language Model for Dialogue Applications, is a machine learning model designed to predict words and sentences based on trained text samples, resulting in a chatbot that can engage in human-like dialogue.

Google utilized its in-house Transformer-based neural network architecture and tailored it for conversational purposes to create LaMDA. Interestingly, OpenAI also utilizes the Transformer architecture in its GPT series of language models. LaMDA was trained on a dataset of 1.56 trillion words drawn from public dialog data and web documents, indicating that the model was intentionally designed for conversational tasks.

As per a blog post from Google Research, LaMDA aims to achieve three primary objectives: quality, safety, and groundedness. These goals enable the chatbot to produce coherent and engaging responses relevant to the given prompt. LaMDA ensures that its responses are never simplistic, such as “I see” or “I’m glad to hear that”.

To improve the factual accuracy score, Google gave LaMDA the ability to seek information from external sources. In other words, it can search the internet in real-time to augment its responses.

How to use Google Bard AI?

Google has recently granted access to Bard after several weeks of inactivity. However, unless you receive an early invitation, like the one we received for our hands-on with Bard, you must join the waitlist and await your turn. Currently, the chatbot is only accessible in the US and UK, with no indication of when other regions and non-English languages will be available.

Considering the extensive demand for conversational chatbots, it’s not unexpected that Google has initially restricted access to Bard to a small group of users. This is consistent with Microsoft’s approach when Bing Chat first launched.

As with other chatbots based on machine learning, it is expected that Bard will be expensive for Google in terms of computational resources. Some projections indicate that each response generated by the chatbot will cost the company ten times more than a typical search. By limiting the visibility and usage of Bard to a small group of users, Google may be able to gradually scale these expenses over time.
